Maryland security deposit basics
Deposit limit
Maryland law generally limits a security deposit to no more than two months’ rent.
Return timeline
Landlords generally must return the deposit, or send a written itemized list of deductions, within 45 days after the tenancy ends.
Receipts & records
Ask for a written deposit receipt and a move-in condition record, and keep copies with your lease.
General educational summary of Maryland law, which can change and may include exceptions and local rules. Review the current law and your lease, and consult an attorney or tenant resource for your situation.
Common renter questions
When should I start talking with a lender if I rent?
Many renters find it helpful to start six to twelve months before their lease ends. That leaves time to review credit, savings, and documents without rushing.
What if my settlement date doesn’t match my lease end date?
Ask your landlord in writing about extension or month-to-month options, review any early-termination terms, and plan for a possible overlap in your budget.
Does paying rent on time help my credit?
Rent is not always reported to credit bureaus. Some landlords and services offer rent reporting. Ask how it works and whether fees apply before enrolling.
Is this legal advice?
No. This page is educational. For questions about your lease or rights, contact an attorney or an official tenant resource.
