Maryland down payment assistance, explained.

A starting point for state and county homebuyer programs—with links to the official sources that have the current details.

Always check official program details. This guide does not list amounts or eligibility because programs, funding, and rules change. Assistance is never guaranteed; the program administrator and participating lender make all decisions.

Questions to ask before you apply

  • Is the assistance a grant, a deferred loan, or a repayable loan?
  • Are there income, purchase-price, or first-time buyer requirements?
  • Is a homebuyer education class required?
  • Does the property have to be my primary residence, and for how long?
  • What happens if I sell, refinance, or move?
  • Which lenders participate, and is funding currently available?
  • Can this assistance be combined with other programs or seller credits?

How to get started

  • Read the official program pages for your county and the state.
  • Talk with a participating lender about which programs fit your loan.
  • Take any required homebuyer education class early.
  • Get current written terms before you count on assistance.
  • Estimate your remaining cash to close with the Closing Cost Estimator.
